Really enjoyed this! Any thoughts on the k guard as a good entry to backside 50/50? I’ve seen good cases for the k guard being used as safer entry to leg locks in mma. Great article loving your stuff

Sweet! Yea I like to drop into into from closed guard in just grappling. How do you feel about closed guard in modern grappling? I’m a big fan of adele Fornarino using it and on the male aside modal Galvao. I’d love an article from you about it. Thank you for amazing reply!

I used to think the closed guard was useless in modern no-gi, but I've changed my opinion drastically.

The main reason I disliked the closed guard was that the top player could easily stand up and get out of it. Yes, you can enter K Guard every time your opponent stands up from your closed guard, and it's one of my favorite entries. However, people nowadays are getting really good at beating that by taking inside knee positioning (look at Jozef Chen vs Elijah Dorsey at the 4:05 timemark).

From there, you can take an underhook DLR instead of a k guard. That would work well because, to take that inside position with the knee, you have to rotate your leg internally.

If your opponent stands back up, you can play a dilemma between an underhook DLR or a K guard, depending on where their knee points.

Obviously, if your opponent doesn't stand back up, closed guard is amazing, with no real threat from the top player.

It would be cool to write an article about it. I like closed guard a lot, but my main guard game revolves around inside position (shin to shin, SLX, half butterfly, etc.). I haven't systematized the closed guard as much as these other guards. However, I could study heavy no-gi closed guard players like Mica, Adele, and Jacob Couch to write the article.

I like half guard just like you love your article on it. Adele’s had an instructional on fanatics about mixing the half guard butterfly with half guard knee shield/z guard good stuff. Thank you for sharing the Chen/dorsey match to see how to use k guard to dlr

I have never seen any instructional from Adele. I'll check out the one you mentioned.

Man I would I love an article like that ! There’s some good pinch headlock entries from closed guard I’ve seen Rani yahya and giancarlo bardoni use and go over. Bardonis was more in gi but can easily be applied to no gi since yahya used them in mma. Could help go from closed to butterfly.

Yeah I actually like a lot the shoulder crunch from Closed Guard to then pummel a butterfly hook and do the Sumi Gaeshi. Overall is such a great guard. I'll work on that article in the future.

Hi Joseph, Thank you so much! I'm glad you're enjoying my work.

In answer to your question, yes, K Guard is amazing for MMA. Cory Sandhagen actually used it against Deiveson Figueiredo during their fight, which inspired this post.

I think it's great because you can enter from many positions, including closed guard, which is probably the most commonly used guard in MMA.

Even though your head is unprotected, you can easily off-balance your opponent from K Guard, so there's really no threat of ground-and-pound. Lastly, if you go for K Guard and your opponent runs away, you are now safe and can just stand back up.

So yeah, you could use K Guard to get to backside 50/50. In MMA, especially, people don't want to be on bottom, so most fighters will probably stay in that position instead of spinning to a normal 50/50, which is great for the guard player in this case.
